ChatGPT

★★★★☆
AI assistant

Verdict: The everything-app of AI — enormous feature surface, great free entry point, and the right answer for plenty of teams. We just reach for it second.

Worth it for

  • Generous entry tier to start with
  • Image generation and voice built in
  • Huge ecosystem — most integrations target it first
  • Familiar to nearly everyone already

Know going in

  • Output often needs more editing for professional work
  • Feature sprawl makes it harder to standardize a team on
  • Long-document work is weaker than the best in class

Honest framing: ChatGPT is excellent, ubiquitous, and probably already in your building whether you sanctioned it or not. For many teams it’s the right default — especially if you want images, voice, and text in one subscription.

Why it’s our second choice, not first: for the work we sell — code, long documents, multi-step automation — we get fewer retries elsewhere. That’s a workload statement, not a universal one. If your week is presentations, brainstorming, images, and email, you may rate these two tools in the opposite order, and you wouldn’t be wrong.

Practitioner note: whatever you choose, choose one primary assistant for the team. The cost of everyone freelancing across three chatbots is paid in inconsistent output and zero shared practice.
