OpenClaw is a gateway you run on your own machine — an old laptop, a Raspberry Pi, a $5 VPS — that puts a full agent behind the messengers you already live in. Text it like a person; it reads mail, manages your calendar, watches your servers, runs cron jobs, browses the web, and speaks out loud on your phone if you want it to.
Why it matters over a chat tab: it’s always on, it remembers, and it acts on your machines with your credentials — nothing routes through someone else’s cloud. It works with 25+ model providers; most people run it on Claude models.
Two honest cautions before you dive in:
- Security is on you. Sensible defaults exist (unknown DMs get a pairing code instead of a conversation), but read the security guide before exposing anything beyond your own devices.
- Community skills are unaudited code. Read what you install — same rule as any plugin ecosystem.
